Isaiah (1777-1838) and John (1783-1854) Townsend, merchants of Albany, were born at Sterling, Orange County, New York. Through the rest of the 1980s and early 1990s Townshend would again experiment with the rock opera and related formats, releasing several story-based albums including White City: A Novel (1985), The Iron Man: A Musical (1989), and Psychoderelict (1993). In 1941, during the war, he married Rosemary Pawle and the following year their eldest son, Giles, was born. Notable artists and designers gave lectures at the college such as auto-destructive art pioneer Gustav Metzger. He also used the Gibson ES-335, one of which he donated to the Hard Rock Cafe. Townshend was born ten days after Nazi Germany surrendered in the Second World War and grew up in the shadow of reconstruction in and around London.
